Not all tent or clear-span structure installations are located on terra firma. Some installations are on elevated scaffold decks, some on parking structures, and some on high-rise building plazas. It is these types of specialized installations that require far more than just “standard tent installation” methods; they require the experience and knowledge of true tenting professionals such as Axis Project Management.

In 2004, a San Francisco based construction company contracted Axis Project Management to design and install a clear-span structure on the third floor plaza of a downtown San Francisco high-rise known as the Sequoias. The plaza where the clear-span structure was to be erected was part of a multi-phased construction project and the clear-span structure was needed to protect the plaza area in the event of inclement weather conditions during construction.

To erect the 80-foot by 70-foot clear-span structure on the plaza deck, engineering on both the plaza deck and the clear-span structure were generated to determine the necessary installation procedures. Once the engineering needs were determined, the plaza’s concrete slab was x-rayed for “post tension” cable locations; then, special anchoring plates were fabricated and installed.

Due to the plaza’s lack of material handling equipment access, the clear-span structure’s components were lifted onto the deck with a 125-ton crane. Once the materials were staged, the beam components were then assembled and ready for the crane to move each beam into place. Upon completion of building the frame, the structure’s roof and wall panels were then installed, thus completing the project on time and within budget.

In 2005, The Sequoias’ Project was recognized by Special Events Magazine as an outstanding example of a complex tent installation and received a nomination for the year’s Best Tent Installation Gala award.
